Barley news Canada: Barley expected to gain area in Canada in 2023

For crop 2023, barley is expected to gain area in Canada (5-6%) while the USA faces stiff competition from other crops, RMI Analytics said in their latest report.

Based upon average yields in both nations, the analysts’ forecast is a slight increase (larger area) in Canada to 10.26 mln tonnes, while the US maintains production at 3.79 mln tonnes, due to slightly lower area and average yields.

Canadian barley export pace was reduced (241 thousand tonnes) in December 2022 and is forecast to remain weak in January 2023. Along with imported corn, the result is slightly higher Canadian stocks level as of December 31st, at a reasonably comfortable (around) 5 mln tonnes.

Barley export prices are unchanged in Canada but with domestic feed barley prices slipping lower, the overall tone in the market is toward the downside. Buyer expectations are lower and the drop in export levels is an indication of a weakening market direction.

Domestic feed barley prices continue to show a weaker tone. March shipments at CAD415/tonne remain a sizeable premium over deferred August shipment, where prices are at CAD390/tonne, delivered Lethbridge.
